Understanding the
Deep Plane Facelift Technique
Although there are several types of facelifts, Dr. Solomon only does a deep plane facelift that elevates both the midface and lower face in harmony. This helps create natural results that won’t make you look overdone or stretched.
How it works

Unlike traditional facelifts that might only tighten the skin and create an unnatural look, Dr. Solomon's approach goes deeper. The two basic principles of a facelift are 1. Releasing all the underlying attachments of the face and 2. Elevating the face that has now been freed from underlying attachments, in the correct vector. Although this sounds simple,  in reality it is not so. Only an extended deep plane lift releases the midface, lower face and neck. SMAS lifts, mini facelifts and other variations do not fully release the face and neck. Hence tension is required to lift the facial tissue as it has not been fully released. This results in the pulled and unnatural look. There is also no harmony in traditional facelifts between the midface and lower face as only a true deep plane facelift can lift the midface.

A extended deep plane facelift releases all the ligamentous attachments. When the face is now lifted in the correct vector/direction, there is no tension; there is a harmonious blend of the midface, lower face and neck as they have been lifted together as a single unit. Because there is no tension, he face looks natural without the pulled look.

For the best results, Dr. Solomon may also recommend facial fat injections, eyelid lifts and skin resurfacing. These non-surgical treatments can restore lost volume and improve skin texture, complementing your facelift. Dr. Solomon’s holistic approach gives you immediate improvements and tends to provide longer-lasting results.

WHAT TO EXPECT

After Your Facelift

After your facelift procedure, here’s what you’ll typically experience:

  • Day of Surgery: Most patients go home a few hours after the procedure once they recover from anesthesia. However, if you also have multiple other procedures like eyelid lifts, brow lift, fat grafting and CO2 laser resurfacing, an overnight stay at the surgery center or another recovery center may be beneficial.
  • Drains: Drains are placed to help remove excess fluid, and you’ll usually wear them for about three to five days.
  • Care with Daily Activities: Be gentle when dressing or showering to avoid disturbing the treated area. Although the area will be tender, you can start showering again 24 hours after the surgery.
  • Bruising and Swelling: It’s normal to experience some bruising and swelling, which can last for two to three weeks.
  • Makeup: By the second week, most swelling has subsided enough that you can begin to wear makeup to cover any lingering bruising.
  • Seeing Results: While you will see changes shortly after the procedure, the final results of your facelift may take three to four months to fully develop.
DIFFERENT
Types of Facelifts
Dr. Solomon only performs a deep plane facelift as he believes any other option is simply a compromise. The deep plane technique is technically more demanding and is the reason why it is not commonly performed except by surgeons who specialize in facial rejuvenation. Surgeons who are capable of doing a true deep plane facelift can easily perform any other type of facelift as they are all much easier. But they do not do this as the results are not comparable.

Mini Facelift

This procedure sounds attractive because patients often think less is more. Unfortunately, with facial rejuvenation even in younger patients with minimal aging, release of attachments is required to produce a natural look that is long lasting. This lift also compromises on the skin incision and proper removal of excess skin along the correct vector is often not possible. All this results in a compromised result.

Mid-Facelift

In theory this facelift focuses on the middle section of the face to address sagging cheeks and deep nasolabial folds. In practice facial aging is never confined to just one area of the face. A well done facelift needs to reposition the mid and lower face for best outcomes. Mid face lifts were a fashion about a decade ago. Well experienced facelift surgeons who specialize in facial rejuvenation typically do not do these procedures anymore as they do not produce desired results

SMAS Facelift

The SMAS (Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System) is the layer present under the skin and subcutaneous fat. SMAS lifts do release this layer partially but not fully like in a deep plane facelift. Although this is a better option than mini facelifts and midface lifts, the results are not as good as a deep plane facelift that releases the SMAS completely.

Deep Plane Facelift

This advanced technique repositions the deeper layers of the face, including the muscles, fat, and ligaments, providing more dramatic and longer-lasting results than traditional facelifts.

FAQs
What Should I Expect From My Consultation?

During your consultation, Dr. Solomon will talk with you about your expectations, whether you are a good candidate for a facelift, and what to expect during and after surgery. This is your opportunity to fully understand the procedure and feel confident that your goals align with the doctor's surgical plan.

What Does Post-Procedure Care Include After a Facelift?

You’ll need to follow specific aftercare instructions to have a smooth recovery. This includes keeping your head elevated, avoiding strenuous activities, and taking prescribed medications to manage pain and reduce the risk of infection.

You may have drains in place for a few days, and it’s important to keep the area clean and dry. Bruising and swelling are common and usually subside within a couple of weeks. Dr. Solomon will schedule follow-up appointments with you to monitor your healing process.

Will I have visible scars after a facelift?

Surgeons carefully place incisions in natural creases or hairlines, making scars less noticeable and typically fading over time.

What is the best age to get a facelift?

Most patients are between 40 and 60 years old, but the best age depends on individual aging patterns and goals.

Will a facelift get rid of all wrinkles completely?

A facelift primarily tightens sagging skin and smooths deeper folds, but fine lines may require additional treatments such as injectables or resurfacing.

What Are My Financing Options for a Facelift?

Financing your facelift can help make the procedure more affordable by allowing you to pay over time. At Solomon Plastic Surgery, we offer several options for you to pay:

  • CareCredit: This healthcare credit card lets you pay for your facelift with convenient monthly payments instead of one large payment upfront.
  • PatientFi: Another flexible financing option, PatientFi provides payment plans tailored to fit your budget, making it easier to manage the cost of your procedure.
  • Paying Out of Pocket: You can also choose to pay for your facelift in full with cash or credit. If you prefer, you can pay a portion upfront and finance the remaining balance through one of our financing options.
These options give you the flexibility to manage your payments in a way that works best for you.
How Can I Maintain My Facelift Results?

It’s important to follow a good skincare routine, protect your skin from the sun, and avoid smoking. In some cases, injectables or skin resurfacing can help extend the longevity of your facelift. It's also helpful to follow a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, to keep your skin happy and looking great.

What Are the Risks and Complications of a Facelift?

As with any surgery, a facelift comes with potential risks and complications. These can include infection, bleeding, scarring, and temporary or permanent changes in skin sensation. Choosing a qualified and experienced surgeon like Dr. Solomon helps minimize these risks, and most complications can be managed if they do arise.

How long do facelift results last?

Results can last 10-15 years, depending on skin type, age, and lifestyle.

How should I prepare for a facelift?

Pre-operative preparation may include stopping certain medications, avoiding smoking, and following your surgeon's instructions.

Will a facelift change my facial expressions?

When performed by a skilled surgeon, a facelift should not alter your natural facial expressions but restore a more youthful appearance.
