About Fat Grafting | Transfer Frisco, Texas
Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Matthias Solomon offers fat grafting to men and women who desire a fuller contour to specific areas of their body. A fat graft or fat transfer removes excess fat from one area of the body via liposuction and transfers it to another area that is lacking volume. Typically, fat cells are harvested from the lower abdomen or outer thighs. This process not only enhances lean areas but can be used to decrease the appearance of certain scars or wrinkles.
At Solomon Plastic Surgery in Frisco, TX, Dr. Solomon will create a customized treatment plan that will address your specific needs and goals. Call our cosmetic practice today to learn more.
Ideal Candidates
Fat grafting is ideal for individuals who have a naturally thin face or have lost volume in certain areas of the body due to advanced age. Patients with depressed scars or acne scarring are typically good candidates for this procedure as well. In addition, fat injections can be used to rejuvenate aged hands so that blood vessels and tendons are not readily visible. Enlargement of the breasts or buttocks can be achieved with fat grafting, but those who desire a more dramatic result may require implants.
Procedures Techniques
Fat grafting is performed in an accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia. Smaller volumes of fat injection to the cheeks or lower eyelids can be performed in the office under local anesthetic. During the initial consultation, Dr. Solomon will determine the area from where the fat cells will be harvested. The fat cells will then be extracted by utilizing a specific liposuction method. Once the different components are centrifuged, the purified fat will then be placed into a syringe and injected into the designated treatment area. Although fat injections can be done to any area of the body, the common areas include the face, breasts, hands, and buttocks. This procedure is often used in conjunction with a facelift to correct volume loss in the cheeks and temples. Besides, fat grafting also rejuvenates the overlying skin, producing a youthful appearance.
What to Expect
Fat grafting is considered an outpatient procedure but the recovery process will vary for each individual. Some patients may have a lengthier recovery period than others depending on the areas of the extraction and transfer. Bruising, swelling, tenderness, and redness are all normal but these symptoms will subside in the weeks that follow. Strenuous activity that is likely to significantly raise blood pressure should be avoided for at least four weeks after surgery. Those who receive a fat transfer to the face should sleep with their head elevated for the first few nights to reduce swelling. Post-operative care instructions will be provided after the procedure.
Other Considerations
It’s important for individuals to maintain a healthy weight as weight fluctuation can alter the results. Although rare, some patients who gain a significant amount of weight after fat grafting can have an overgrowth of the injected fat, which can produce unfavorable contours. Short-term lumpiness is possible but usually resolves with time.
A fat grafting procedure is a natural alternative to silicone implants or facial fillers, and is a safe way to achieve the fuller look that you desire. Since this procedure utilizes your own fat cells, adverse or allergic reactions are unlikely. If you want to enhance your shape or diminish the appearance of facial wrinkles or scars, call our front desk staff today to set up an appointment.
