Types of Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck plastic surgery or abdominoplasty can be performed using different techniques. Your surgeon will discuss the best technique with you according to your anatomical and personal aesthetic needs.

Traditional Tummy Tuck

This is a more common technique used to perform tummy tuck surgery. It will involve a hip to hip incision along with additional small incisions around the navel.

This procedure is designed to address your complete abdominal area (both upper and lower abdomen), and may require shifting of the navel to create natural looking results. Abdominal liposuction may sometimes be performed in conjunction with this surgery.

Partial Abdominoplasty

Partial abdominoplasty or a mini tummy tuck may be appropriate for you if your weight is fairly close to your ideal body weight, and you are only looking for improvement to the lower part of your abdomen (below the belly button.)

Repositioning of the belly button is not involved in this surgery. A mini tummy tuck will create less dramatic results, but will also involve a quicker recovery than other types of abdominoplasty.

Circumferential Tummy Tuck

Circumferential tummy tuck can be considered as one type of body lift surgery. If you have undergone a bariatric surgery, resulting in major weight loss and a substantial presence of loose and hanging skin around the abdomen, you could benefit from circumferential abdominoplasty.

The procedure will provide aesthetic benefits as well as protect you against the risk of infection within the skin folds. Circumferential tummy tuck will involve excess skin removal from the central abdominal area, and the incisions will extend to your back. Sometimes, loose skin from the thighs and buttocks may also be removed along with this procedure to create more harmonious looking results.

Abdominal Muscle Tightening

If your abdominal muscles have become lax over time, your surgeon will tighten the drooping muscle mass in the abdomen using the same incisions through which they will remove excess skin and fat.

The surgeon will separate the skin from the abdominal walls, and pull together the underlying muscles more tightly. The muscles will be sutured in a way to create a more toned appearance of your abdomen and give the effect a narrow waistline.

Excess Skin Removal

Once the muscle tightening in your abdomen is completed, your surgeon will pull the skin taut over the area, and trim away the excess skin. In some cases, liposuction may have to be used first to remove any fat deposits before the skin is stretched downward. Once the surgery is completed, your surgeon will close the wounds with traditional or absorbable sutures.
